Use “Source” Meta Tags to Identify Original Online Content

Posted November 15, 2010

Get the credit you deserve using one of Google’s new meta tags for Google News. Google recently announced that they are experimenting with two meta tags - syndication-source and original source - which will give publishers the ability to take credit for their own work, as well as give credit to other online journalists. The syndication-source meta tag should be used by publishers to indicate to Google which source of a syndicated article should appear in Google News, giving credit to the original publisher. The original-source meta tag should be used by journalists to credit the first source that reports on a story, giving credit to the original journalist.  The original-source meta tag can also be used to cite alternative sources via a link, which will credit the articles that were used to create the new content. Google plans on monitoring the use of these meta tags before they can establish the best use for them. Keep in mind that if these meta tags are used inappropriately, Google may remove the corresponding content from Google News if necessary.
