Use Keyphrase Focused Blog Tags and Categories

Posted April 21, 2011

Using SEO keyphrase-centric blog tags when tagging your posts can both improve usability and improve search engine rankings. Categories are used to divide blog posts into specific topics, making it easier for users to follow a particular subject. Focus on creating categories with relevantly-tagged blog posts and optimize each category listing page around its reinforced content theme, which will help those pages rank on those targeted keyword phrases. Make sure to avoid instances of duplicate content by limiting each post or article to one or two categories. Tags on the other hand are typically more specific to individual topics within the post to give readers a more drilled-down method for accessing specific topics. Without overusing tags, make sure you choose a few that compliment the category. For example, if your category is “SEO,” then your tags might be “on-page optimization,” “link building,” or “targeted keywords.” Overall, categories have more importance than tags to search engines because they are found in a higher level of the URL structure; however, keyphrase focused tags can still be very effective.
