Digital Transformation Fuels 33% Application Growth
University of Redlands
The Challenge
Founded in 1907, the University of Redlands is a leading private institution in California known for its personalized, hands-on approach to education. With over 40 undergraduate and 30 graduate programs, it has prepared students for lives of meaning, impact, and joy for more than a century.
After a period of growth, mergers, and shifting priorities, Redlands faced a digital crossroads. Its decade-old website reflected outdated systems and internal structures rather than the user-focused experience modern audiences expect. Platform limitations, sprawling content across 10,000+ pages, and a lack of governance had left the university’s web presence fragmented and hard to manage.
Partnering with Verndale, the university set out to realign marketing and IT, modernize technology, and rebuild the website from the ground up with strategy at its core.
The Solution
- Audience-first content and design, moving away from internal hierarchies toward user intent with clear calls-to-action
- Centralized content governance, shifting to a web team, subject matter experts, and a web governance council
- Improved search, leveraging Optimizely Graph to enhance discovery and relevance
- Future-ready architecture, built for personalization, accessibility, multilingual expansion, and AI integration
The Outcome
The University of Redland's new modern website was built with purpose, underscored by transformative results. Content was streamlined from more than 10,000 pages to just over 1,200, empowering the university's core web team to maintain quality and purpose. Multiple university sites were unified into a single, scalable, accessible platform with a clear governance model that aligns IT, Marketing, and university leadership.
A cohesive design system and content model now support ongoing optimization, encompassing accessibility and SEO, as well as personalization and future AI-driven experiences. With a more intuitive user journey and improved content strategy, Redlands is engaging more qualified prospects than ever before.
The site now serves as a dynamic storytelling platform, one that connects students, faculty, and alumni through intuitive navigation, focused messaging, and measurable performance improvements.
Note: This website redesign project was completed between 2023–2024, with launch in September 2024. Results reflect performance following launch.
